The Liberty Flames are literally starting their season on the hot side of things as they open the season with a clean sweep in dominating fashion over St. John’s.
On Sunday, the Flames defeated the Red Storm in a drumming fashion, 11-2. Liberty won the first game of the series on Opening Day by the score of 12-3, and had to fight for it a little more on Saturday evening in a 3-0 victory.
Pitching and offensive production has been the story for the Flames early on. In game one of the series the Flames had two batters drive in four RBI with one driving in three, while the pitching combined for nine strikeouts which was led by starter Dylan Mathiesen who worked four strong innings with six strikeouts.
On Saturday, the pitching was dominate once again in the three-run victory. Starting pitcher for the Flames, Ben Blair, who worked six strong innings allowed on five hits with 11 strikeouts.
The 11 strikeouts by Blair was a career high.
On Sunday, the batting was more affective than the pitching was. Liberty’s Jaxson Sorensen hit his first home run of the season and drove in three more while Tucker Moore drove in two runs on a 1-3 night. The Flames had three more guys drive in one run combined.
As for the pitching Saturday, the Flames used more pitchers on the series finale than in the first two games. They worked in seven different pitchers and combined worked nine innings allowing eight hits, two runs, four walks and striking out six.
Liberty will go on the road for a midweek contest against the North Carolina Wolfpack on Tuesday. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST. They will then welcome in Xavier for a three-game set from Feb. 21-23.
