That bats for West Virginia did not awaken during the Mountaineers midweek contest with Big Ten foe Penn State on Tuesday night, as the the Nittany Lions upset the No. 17 ranked Mountaineers, 3-2.
West Virginia’s only scoring came off of the bat of Spencer Barnett in the seventh inning when he blasted a no-doubt two-run home run to left field that went 400 feet. Other than that, Penn State’s pitching staff lived up to the expectations on Tuesday night.
Penn State’s pitching staff stuck out a total of 10 batters. They held Jace Rinehart, Grant Hussey and Sam White to a combined 0-for-11 night at the plate. That’s taking away three major keys to the Mountaineers offensive run production on the season.
On the flip side, West Virginia’s pitching staff performed well, striking out 12 Nittany Lions. Carson Estridge, Ben Hudson and Mac Stiffler each had three strikeouts. Tyler Hutson had two while Chase Meyer had just one strikeout.
The Mountaineers look to bounce back in this weekend's series against UCF in Orlando starting Friday night. The three-game series will be available on ESPN+.
