The West Virginia Mountaineers, under first-year head coach Steve Sabins, have done something historic. That is starting the season 7-0.
This is, according to Ryan Decker of Gold and Blue Nation, only the seventh time in program history that West Virginia started 7-0 or better.
West Virginia has had everything working this season, but primarily the pitching staff has been carrying the team to victories with clutch strikeouts and forcing teams into double play situations.
West Virginia pitching has been top-notch this season to help compile the 7-0 record. Combined numbers: (excluding Mondays win over Lipscomb)
52 IP, 12 R, 35 H, 56/26 K/BB ratio with a combined pitching ERA of 2.07.
West Virginia will now prepare for Ohio, which has not had a good start to its season, especially on the pitching front.
The Ohio team is 1-5 on the season and has been outscored by opponents 42-28. Ohio’s pitching staff has worked a total of 48.2 innings, allowing 38 runs on 59 hits, with a 39/35 strikeout-to-walk ratio and has a combined ERA of 7.09 on the season.
The two meet for a midweek contest in Morgantown on Wednesday, Feb. 26, with first pitch scheduled for 2 pm.
